 Marches YAC 'Dig It' 2013!

Our three winners!

This summer, three lucky members of Marches YAC won the popular YAC UK 'Dig It' competition. The prize - an opportunity to dig alongside real archaeologists on a current excavation! Our lucky winners, Rowan, Daisy and James joined staff from Cadw and the Clwyd Powys Archaeological Trust for a day at Hen Caerwys in North Wales. Hen Caerwys is the site of a deserted Medieval settlement. All you can see today are low banks and stony platforms that mark the sites of houses and fields that were functioning six hundred years ago. Archaeologists have been excavating at Hen Caerwys for the past 3 years to try to understand more about the site.

Armed with one of their YAC prizes - a fantastic archaeologists' tool roll - Daisy, James and Rowan helped to dig a section across one of the boundary banks that divide up the site and had a go using some of the equipment archaeologists use to record what they find.

Rowan said that "the best bit was learning to dig properly with the right tools". James added " I really enjoyed the digging. If I had to describe my day I'd say hard work, rewarding and interesting". Daisy said what she enjoyed most was "digging the stones and interviewing archaeologists for the video diary abnd getting my tool kit".
